Many of you have watched this company grow from a seedling. Maybe you were in the office that day that I brought the first batch of marshmallows to work to share. Maybe you were the high school friend on my Facebook page that started seeing marshmallow posts and wondering "boy, this girl must really love marshmallows!"? Maybe you were there at the first holiday bazaar where we sold our marshmallows and you watched Madyson and I set up our booth with such excitement. Maybe you were the family members who wondered in our early days exactly how we plan to make a family business out of marshmallows. You might even be the banker, the postman, the co-worker, the teacher, the swim instructor, the carpool mom, the soccer coach or any other array of folks we interact with in our daily routine.

Many of you have simply tasted our marshmallows and loved them. Whoever you are and however you came to know us, we know one thing...you believe in us. You've chosen to follow our path and encourage us along.

When we started down this road three years ago, we had a lot to figure out. Comments that you've shared with us have helped to form our product. "Your marshmallows need to be more bite-sized." So we developed the cute little {2-bite} size that we currently have. "My marshmallows topple over in the package and scuff each other up" So, we switched to classy candy boxes. "The chocolate on my marshmallows was melted when I got them." So, we invested in ice packs and thermal packaging. "You should make marshmallow candy bars!" And, so we did. "Hey, have you trademarked this?" Now, we have.

You've been by our side through every step. Thank you! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Now we need to grow. With national exposure of our brand, we've crossed a new threshold. Renting a kitchen and making marshmallows on the weekends just isn't reality for us anymore. Re-filling the chocolate bowl every hour just isn't cutting it. We NEED to have our own place and we NEED bigger chocolate machines.

This is why we've turned to Kickstarter.com We need cash. Running a business is not cheap {remember that trademarking I mentioned earlier...that's a very expensive necessity}. We pay for rent, insurance, licensing, packaging, taxes, equipment, ingredients, web hosting, domain names, trademarking, marketing and much, much more. All of these expenses are incurred just to get the product out the door...not to grow our company.

We want to grow our company. Our fans want us to grow our company. And, we want you to continue to be a partner in the growth of Madyson's Marshmallows. We want to be successful and make you proud that you've chosen to believe in us.

Christmas in our home was lovely. It always is. It's perplexing to me how the whole Christmas season comes on like a herd of reindeer and blows out like Santa's dust trail.

Remember as a kid how it took FOREVER for time to pass? It seemed like an eternity while I waited to get my driver's license. And, don't even get me started on the everlasting wait for the ripe age of 18 when this know-it-all was able to start adult hood. If I only knew to savor my childhood... As any mom does, I try to pass my "lessons learned" on to my two girls. Madyson tells me that even when she is married, she and her husband will live with us. Two EASY Homemade Gift Ideas!

If you are anything like me, you have a crazy, busy, very full day - every day. In my home, it goes something like this...

Quickly shower and dress before any young humans start screaming my name.
Wake the kids (i.e. play music, start the dryer and be extremely loud in their room).
Dress the kids (through 3 changes of clothes because the purple skirt is not as pretty as the yellow skirt, but wait, the yellow skirt is not as pretty as the pink skirt).
Cram breakfast and peel out of the driveway.
Spend 6-8 hours earning a paycheck
Pick up the kids. Throw some snacks to the backseat while we blaze a trail over to swim lessons.
Shower, blow dry, dress and bundle up the kids to go back outside.
Nice, peaceful family dinner (where no one eats and everyone whines)
Head upstairs to find pajamas, floss teeth, brush teeth, brush hair & go potty.
Story time and in bed they go! Followed by an hour of..."MOM! My left elbow is owie" or "MOM! My hair is messy" or my personal favorite..."MOM! She is looking at me!"

And...after all of this, I still have to feed the dog, clean up the kitchen and get the backpacks ready for school the next day. Hopefully, I have an hour to catch up on my DVR. I first saw this fantastic idea at a friends house - it was a bottle of soap in their guest bathroom that was decorated with their last name. To coconut or not to coconut?

Some people love coconut. Some don't. Turns out a lot of our gourmet marshmallow lovin' fans do!

A few weeks ago on our Facebook page, we asked for flavor suggestions on our Chip Fluffs™ and many of our Fans asked for a coconut marshmallow to roast. We decided to kick that up a notch and make a Chocolate Coconut Chip Fluff™ - our gourmet marshmallow filled with coconut and chocolate chips. Roast that, baby!

Fantastic idea, right? Right! We made it. We roasted it. And...the bottom of the marshmallow fell right off. Oops! Well...the top half was delicious anyway! This just reminds us that we should ALWAYS run a quality assurance "roast" on all of our Chip Fluffs™ not just to test taste but to test function also. The idea of a coconut filled marshmallow is still fantastic so we're going back to the drawing board on this one and in the end, we're sure we will stand strong with a chocolate & coconut marshmallow!

Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party Marshmallows...they get curiouser and curiouser!

Madyson's Marshmallows was approached by event planner Jennifer Price Carver a couple of months ago about doing some Alice in Wonderland marshmallows for a little girl named Alice who was about to turn 6 years old. Well, I've never heard of this before, but it sounded like uncommon nonsense.

Is there a more non-sensible theme than Alice in Wonderland for a little un-birthday girl named Alice? I think not because, if I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn't be, and what it wouldn't be, it would. You see? So, we jumped right in with some not so serious marshmallow making fun.

Oh...the mushrooms...one side will make you grow taller.

After all that and of all the silly nonsense,

It would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

Honestly, most of these Halloween marshmallow pictures have been ready to post for weeks. But, it just didn't feel right. Come on, it's early September after all! Are you already thinking about Halloween (a few of you crazies are, I'm sure)? I know that I'm not. So, I've waited to post. You are welcome.

How to make a gourmet marshmallow flower pot!

Do you find gardening therapeutic? I don't. I love to be out in the sunshine but I don't find gardening fun at all. So, my garden is in the kitchen and my flowers are covered in chocolate.

For some reason, I've found that working with fondant or gum paste IS therapeutic for me. It can be very tedious work and it can be extremely intricate. When a project turns out beautiful, like this flowering pot did, I love the end result and I feel accomplished.

This project is actually not too intricate so don't be fooled by the fancy flowers. All you need is some fondant and a rolling pin, a flower shaped cookie cutter, some sort of scalloped cutter (I used a pastry dish), some candy beads and some gel icing to make it all stick together.

Instead of making chocolate chip marshmallows in a pan, we use the Wilton brownie pop mold and we pipe our marshmallows into the mold. After the marshmallow sets, use white pop stick to "pop" the marshmallows.

Let's make some flowers!

I always use Crisco to grease my hands when working with fondant or gum paste. This gives it a smooth feel and it makes an easier material to work with. Lube up!
Roll your material onto a cutting board or marble slab.
Cut your flowers out with your fancy new flower cookie cutter. I picked these daisies up at Michael's because, of course, the daisy is our company logo.
Cut your scalloped circle with your pastry dish or something similar.
Using your icing gel, glue your flower to your scalloped circle. Let set.
Dip your marshmallows in the tempered chocolate and just before the chocolate has set, drop a flower/scalloped circle on top. The tempered chocolate will adhere the scalloped circle to the marshmallow pop.
Use your icing gel to adhere a candy bead to the center of your flower to finish off the look of the flower. The icing gel needs to dry for a bit so try to keep your pops upright. You can pick up a pop stand

Let's make a flowering pot!

If you are giving your flower pot away, it's a good idea to wrap your pops in plastic packaging to keep freshness.
Depending on the size of the clay pot you are working with, you will need a different amount of pops. It's better to make a few more than you need so you can fill in the empty holes if necessary and if not necessary, you can run a quality assurance check and make sure everything tastes just right.
Pick up a styrofoam ball for the inside of your pot. It's a good idea to purchase your pot and styrofoam ball at the same time so that you find the right size ball that's perfect for the pot.
Lay the ball inside the pot. I did not find the need to glue the ball to the pot (although I was concerned about my pops being top heavy, which just wasn't the case in the end).
Stick your pops into the styrofoam ball close together but with some even spacing.
Fill your flower pot with brown crinkle cut between the pops.
Add a pretty ribbon to the outside of your pot. I used white tulle. I'm a fan of tulle, big time. It's simple and elegant.

Beautiful, isn't it?! This is a lovely gourmet gift for friends. It's also a really pretty centerpiece for parties. We used our flowering pot for a donation item for our local Relay for Life.

Delicious hand-made honey graham cracker recipe!

It's a lot easier than you'd think to make your own graham crackers. Although it took us two attempts, the second batch turned out really well.

Here is the original recipe we started with but we made some modifications. However, props where props are due. Mr. Brown has some pretty weird recipes but you can always substitute ingredients to make it a little less-weird. His technique is usually spot on.

So...here is the skinny on making these delicious honey graham crackers. You'll need a food processor.

Combine the ingredients as instructed in your food processor but...

substitute honey for the molasses
substitute light brown sugar for the dark brown sugar

After you add the butter, the recipe says it should look like cornmeal. It looked pretty much the same to me as before adding the butter so don't expect any major changes as far as how it looks.

Now, here is where Alton Brown's recipe is sort of hard to follow so just do these steps:

After you pull your dough ball out of the fridge, juggle it. It's just plain fun.
Remove the plastic wrap and roll your dough ball with a rolling pin between two pieces of parchment paper (work those biceps!). I rolled my dough out pretty thin...thinner than 1/8 inch the recipe says. And, let's be honest...I made my husband do it.
Cut cute little shapes out of your dough with any cookie cutter you have handy. I used a circle cutter so that I can fit it nicely on a Madyson's Marshmallow later for dessert.
Lay one of your already used pieces of parchment paper on a baking sheet and put your cute little shapes on top of the paper (yes, you'll cook the paper with the crackers).
Cook 10-12 minutes...I pulled mine out at 12 minutes and they were almost perfect. They were just slightly too crunchy for my liking so next time I plan to pull them out at 10 minutes. Remember that they keep cooking even when pulled from the oven so even if they don't look done, they probably are.
Let them cool a bit and then find the closest kid that you can use as your taste tester. Kid's love graham crackers so no matter how they turned out, you'll be praised (but I'm sure they will be perfectly delicious)!

The instructions in the Alton Brown recipe are to cook these babies for much longer...25 minutes I do believe. Just don't. On my first attempt, I cooked them 20 minutes and they were practically charred. In this case, less is definitely more.

We're planning to use these graham crackers in a new version of our gourmet dark chocolate S'more marshmallow so hang tight and we'll have it up on our website soon!

Hope, Love, Cure! Marshmallow "Tree of Life"

We've got a very special project spread across our kitchen this week. A few clues...

1) It's white and brown (well...that's not much of a clue since everything we do has some element of white and brown).
2) It's also teal (but could have easily been pink or purple or blue).
3) It's very word-y but not in a "stuck by the water cooler with a jabbering co-worker sort of way."
4) It's blossoming as I type (figuratively).
5) it's 100% edible.

Drum roll please... ... ... ... ... ... It's our chocolate dipped marshmallow "Tree of Life!"

Why teal? It's for a fundraising event to support Ovarian Cancer.
Why so word-y? Not word-y enough if you ask us! There are so many words that we wanted to use on this tree but the hard facts are this: we only have about an inch and a half of marshmallow surface to work with so anything more than 7 letters just won't do (unless you want to squint like this to read what's on your dessert).
Blossoming? Yes, blossoming. That's how we feel about this project. The more we work on it, the more it's blossoming. What started out as a fun idea, has blossomed into something we are really proud of.
Everything we make is always 100% edible. What fun would it be otherwise?

So, how do you make such awsomeness? It's easy actually.

Pick a pop to make or buy some pops, whichever floats your boat. We highly recommend marshmallow pops but hey, to each their own. If you are going to make pops, buy a silicone baking mold and some sticks to "pop" with.
Decorate the top of your pops. You can buy candies with phrases on them or your can hand write phrases on your pops with chocolate, using parchment paper as your piping bag. We used fondant and sugar sheets on each of our pops and we cut out each word with our delightful Cricut machine.
Buy one of those styrofoam cone things from the craft store - 18-22 inches is best. Always, ALWAYS use a 40% off at Michael's coupon. Who would think styrofoam would be so expensive? The regular price of a cone is between $4-10, depending on the size.
Buy some ribbon in your favorite vibrant color.
Buy some fabric pins with a nice, pretty head on the end as they are visible on the tree (under all the sugar and chocolate).
Starting from the top, wrap your ribbon around the cone...alllllllllllllll the way to the bottom, inserting one of your pretty fabric pins about every 5 laps. That was easy, right? Hint: must start from the top in order to later "insert" the pops without making your ribbon look funky.
Insert your pops into the seams of your ribbon around the tree, spaced evenly both around the tree and up the tree.
Buy something festive to poke into the top of your tree - maybe something that says "Cancer Stinks!" or "Kick Cancer's Butt!" or "Save the Tata's!"

Bring your beautiful tree to a fancy event as a dessert or centerpiece item; or bring it as a hostess gift. Sit back and listen to folks "ooh" and "ahh" while excitedly asking "who made this?!"

You've packed the tent, you've grabbed the sleeping bags, you've loaded the cooler with good ol' BBQ fixin's, the dogs are panting in the back, the bikes are hooked up to the trailer and the kids are buckled in...do you have the marshmallows? 10 reasons to be interested in the royal wedding...

Our invitation to the royal wedding was clearly lost in the mail! So we're spending the evening surfing the internet and speculating about the dress, the ring, the desserts and the entire darn royal shindig from right here on the couch, while we catch up on our Tivo. But hey, we found 10 really fun tidbits to share with you...

Our idea for royal wedding favors

It's being speculated that Prince William and Kate will be the first royal couple to sign a pre-nup. Mom and dad's divorce didn't set a great example, apparently.
The Fruitcake is a wedding reception favorite in England (really?) and will likely be one of the desserts served at the royal wedding. I guess they didn't get the memo about our marshmallows.
Kate, at the ripe old age of 29, will be the youngest royal bride ever. Princess Diana was just 20 when she married. The youngest royal bride was Isabella of Valois, who was aged just six when she married Richard II in 1396 (huh?).
Queen Elizabeth, at the tender young age of 85, actively tweets. By the way, only 3% of those over 65 tweet. Go Lillibet (her official nickname per wiki).
Speaking of social networking, Kate Middleton's engagement ring has its own Facebook page. Okay, that's a bit nutty.
The birth rate in England is expected to spike by 190% in 2011, a common occurrence in years of Royal Weddings, World Cup victories, and uh...moon landings. This is exciting stuff here, folks...break out the champagne!
Due to a loophole still on the books, Kate will also rule India. Nice move Kate, nice move.
Kanye West was invited to the wedding, but Obama was not. Talk about the ultimate diss.
Ellen Degeneres is a distant cousin (15th) to Kate. Ellen IS really dominating the world, isn't she?!
A quarter of the world's population is expected to watch the royal wedding on television. That is a total of 2 billion people. Will you be watching?

By popular request (ok just one request but we thought it was a really good idea), this year we've added gourmet marshmallow flowers to our spring assortment. TULIPS & DAISIES!! Each marshmallow flower is hand decorated with chocolate shavings.

In April and just a week before Easter, we'll be a vendor at Girl's Night Out at the Windmill in Sumner, WA. These chocolate dipped marshmallow flowers are the star attraction! Hoisted high upon a long white stick, each marshmallow will be eloquently accessorized with beautifully colored ribbon that just screams spring. Our table will be filled with vases of these marshmallow beauties.

I've been watching enviously as these beautiful cupcake cups hit the scene. I've searched high and low for them in a mini form for the marshmallows. I always turn up empty handed. I don't know if my search skills are lacking or if they really haven't been available but regardless, my search is finally over. I wish!

I've always wanted to celebrate Mardi Gras in New Orleans...just once. I'd like to sip a mojito while throwing some beads from the balcony of a French Quarter buiding (with my shirt on). I'd like to paint my face and parade up and down a crazy busy street and dance to authentic jazz music in a glittery costume covered in hot pink feathers. I'd like to dive my face into a giant king cake and who cares if I find a miniature doll. I'd like to indulge in the ultimate people watching experience. And after a long, fun night...in the morning, I'd like to indulge in a sweet beignet from a true "patisserie." Dare to dream folks, dare to dream.

Breaking out of her shell...Madyson runs the wedding show!

"Mommy, can I be the first one to talk to the people? I want to tell them that my name is Madyson and I'm the marshmallow girl and welcome to Madyson's Marshmallows." Why YES Madyson, I would LOVE that!

We've been doing this marshmallow gig for a year and a half now. We've done several shows where we've displayed our product and talked to potential customers about how our chocolate dipped gourmet marshmallows can fit their event. Madyson smiles a lot and and tries to talk to our customers but she often does so with her chin turned in towards her neck and with a crooked smile from the corner. Her intentions are good...she WANTS to talk to you...but she is also embarrassed. This is a typical behavior for a young little five year old girl. We just give her time and space to speak at her own pace and she does just fine.

Well, that all changed this past weekend. The tides have turned. For the first time, Madyson was eager to get in front of our customers and talk to them. Several times, she walked up to a customer by herself and stood in front of them (at below-hip level, mind you) and waited for them to stop speaking so that she could give them her spiel with a giant smile. She was so proud of her new skill. She is very soft spoken and so in some cases, it took a few times of repeating herself...but as our customers bent down to listen to her, they were pleased with what they heard from this little girl. And, then they looked up at me to see a beaming smile on a proud mama. I was silently cheering "you go girl!!"

Well, well... I've just recently had my very first experience with "antiquing." I would usually compare this sort of shopping activity with shopping at Ross Stores. Everything in a Ross store is chaotic and disheveled and as soon as I walk in, I am immediately drawn to walk right back out. This sort of messy shopping absolutely drives me bananas.

This week, a friend and I are designing the Madyson's Marshmallows booth for a wedding show this weekend, where we will meet with dozens of newly engaged brides to show them our hand monogrammed, chocolate dipped gourmet marshmallows. As we brainstorm theme ideas for the booth, my friend suggests we pop in to an antique store to look for some table top items. I believe "gag me" was my immediate, unfiltered response to her suggestion. She convinced me that she had a vision. And, I do occasionally take one for the team...so "antiquing" I went.

As I marched in front of my friend, walking quickly through the store to get the experience over with, she slowly sauntered behind, picking up random ~~crap~~ items with an intent look on her face. She had vision for our booth and I was not yet so enlightened.

In a small corner over there, or hanging high up here, or under that pile on the floor over there, my friend pulled out one cute item after another and explained to me her vision for our booth. In our minds, we were painting, sanding, decoupaging and decorating each piece that we picked up. Maybe she's just a good visionary but soon enough...I SAW IT!! I saw the vision!! In no time flat, I became the slow walker perusing each crevice of the store and asking where the next antique store was on the block.

Shabby Chic is the new me! I can't wait to incorporate this look into our gourmet marshmallow booth this weekend. And, heads up to the husband...our house is due for a makeover, right?

You can’t beat home sweet home (with some candy bars)!

Oh there’s no place like home for the holidays! That’s exactly where I want to be this Christmas. It’s time to sip hot cocoa, decorate the house, put up the tree and enjoy the spirit of the season. A little late, right? We've been a bit busy.

Christmas is in just a few short days and I am finally finding space between the stand mixer and the chocolate machine for some holiday joy. This has been a fantastic holiday season for Madyson’s Marshmallows…and a huge THANK YOU to many of you! YOU have gifted our little snowmen, gingerbread men & Christmas trees. YOU have indulged in our festive Christmas wrapped candy boxes. YOU have delighted your employees and customers with our chocolate holiday treats. YOU are sharing our hot cocoa and mini fluffs with your friends and family this week (some of you are adding your own extra kick). And, YOU are satisfying your sweet tooth with our new homemade chocolate bars.

Let’s talk about those chocolate bars for a minute. A great friend of mine recommended this idea to me. My immediate thought was “of course, a S’mores bar! It’s so obvious that this is a fantastic idea…we make our own marshmallows and all, right?” It’s a lot harder than it looks. And here’s why…

1. Buy a candy bar mold…not so hard. Oh wait, that mold isn’t deep enough. Buy another. Can’t find a deeper one locally – must order online.
2. Receive deeper candy bar mold 5 days later from the nice postal worker.
3. Fire up the chocolate machine. Pour first layer of chocolate down in the mold. Let sit one hour.
4. Clean up the chocolate machine and put it away.
5. Fire up the stand mixer. Put a layer of marshmallow on the chocolate mold. Add graham cracker. Let sit 4 hours.

6. Fire up the chocolate machine again. Pour final layer of chocolate onto mold, covering marshmallow and graham cracker. (Try to) Scrape off excess chocolate to create a flat bottom. You have one shot at this. Do not, I repeat, do not try to do a second scrape. It’s just not worth it. For the type A personalities out there like me, just breathe and let it go. Let sit one hour.

7. Gently turn mold upside down and take bar out.
8. On a cutting board and with a very sharp knife, cut excess chocolate from sides of bar. If you cut too close to the bar, it will break.
9. With a paint brush, brush off chocolate crumbs so the candy bar is clean.
10. Wrap bar in candy foil.
11. Apply your own crafty skills here to create a custom tag for each bar.
12. Realize that the mold you have works well enough and order 10 more molds online.
13. Receive deeper candy bar molds 5 days later from the nice postal worker.
14. Repeat.

15. I was able to make eight bars at one time before running out of chocolate (i.e. one bowl was enough for the first layer of chocolate in about 8 molds. Another bowl of chocolate is needed for the top layer of the bar in the 8 molds).

Yield: 2 weeks later, 4 rounds of cleaning the chocolate machine (no small task), 2 batches of marshmallows, and 1 trip out for more chocolate, I had 8 pretty candy bars to hand out to our family and friends.

We hope you all enjoy your treats this Christmas whether they are under the tree, in the stockings, or already in your tummy. To our family that received the above mentioned chocolate bars, we REALLY hope you enjoy them.

New Fall Flavors Are Coming Your Way!

It's November 1st already! We can hear the jingle bells ringing...

It seems like not too long ago...and most definitely not a year ago, that Madyson and I were knee deep in starting this little project we call a gourmet marshmallow business. Our first adventure outside of our test kitchen (uh, the kitchen in our home, complete with the clutter of bills and pre-school projects), was for Madyson to set up a booth at a local holiday bazaar at mom's work. Madyson and I shopped for decorations for our table; we mixed and dipped for the entire week prior; we set up our table as cute as we could and my my, how this child beamed when her first customer came to visit! We worked at our booth for several hours and Madyson turned on the charm for every single shopper. Each time someone handed her a dollar for a marshmallow, her eyes became big and bright and she grinned from ear to ear. This girl was on cloud nine!

Over the course of our first holiday season, Madyson and I set up a booth at three different holiday bazaars. Each bazaar was a little more successful...our table was a little more organized...Madyson walked away with a little more cash for her piggy bank. By the end of December, we had made over 1000 marshmallows in our "test kitchen." Our friends, co-workers and family were so very supportive of our small home business and they told their friends. Word of mouth is the best advertising, isn't it?

As the story goes, we made our little project official shortly after the holiday season. We rented a kitchen, got the proper licensing, arranged the packaging and launched the website. And, we're sure glad we did! Now a year later, we've perfected our most popular flavors and we're able to bring you new flavors for the new holiday season. Stay tuned as we roll out some fun new Dipped Fluffs like Blueberries & Chocolate, Peppermint Bark, Chocolate Hazelnut, Peanut Butter Toffee, Honey Pecan and Cinnamon Dulce Espresso.

We're getting ready for the next round of holiday bazaars coming up in just a few short weeks. Now that Madyson is in kindergarten, I might be flying solo at the booth. Unless...hmmm...I wonder if teachers take bribes? We'll gladly trade our gourmet marshmallows for some homework she can do under the table between customers. Oh just kidding - she can work the evening shift with me.

Ghosts, Skulls, Spiders...and birthday cake!

This is Madyson's favorite time of year!
Between birthdays and Halloween, October in our house is filled with an abundance of cake and candy. Can you blame this sweet-toothed little girl for loving life right now? This is also the only month out of the year that she actually eats her chicken and vegetables at dinner every night. She knows very well by now that the afore-mentioned cake and candy are only heading down to her tummy if she eats the healthy stuff first. That works out well for me!

Madyson kicks off this celebratory month with her 5th birthday. She has requested a party with all of her friends where they can bounce themselves silly in some jumpy toys. Her birthday will actually be celebrated on three different days this year (you know how that goes if you have out of town family), but Madyson is certainly not complaining. For her this means three days filled with presents and cake!

For the remainder of October, Madyson will celebrate her baby sister and her dad's birthdays...you got it...more cake. When the birthdays are all said and done, it's time to dress up in her My Little Pony costume and take to the streets with two of her Little Pony girlfriends for some candy collecting. We trick-or-treat a little differently though in our house. We like to surprise our neighbors at their door by handing THEM one of our gourmet marshmallow pops.

Ghosts and skulls and spiders, oh my! This year, we'll be handing out some fun Halloween marshmallows to our neighbors like Madyson's Little Ghostesses and Madyson's Screamin Skulls...Boo! Come on over and trick-or-treat with us! You can certainly find a variety of Halloween gourmet marshmallows just right for sharing with your neighbors, friends and family.

Wow, our small little marshmallow business has come a long way in less than a year! Our first marshmallow extravaganza was just about this time last year and next weekend we will celebrate the anniversary of Madyson's very first official trade show. How are we celebrating? With another trade show! Madyson will once again be rockin' the hot pink Fluff booth at "Sumner Summer Nights JAMFEST" (formerly Battle of the Bands).

Boy, have we come a long way in this very quick year!

The Fluffs started out the size of a large square brownie and now they are cute as a mini cupcake.
They started out plain and now they are dipped in various fine chocolates and sweet toppings.
They started in zip lock bags and now we have adorable candy packaging that helps to build our brand.
We started this "hobby" in our home, with limited counter space and small single batches and now we produce multiple of those small single batches at a time in a local rented kitchen.
When we started, our Fluffs were a hot water cooler topic mostly among those close to Madyson or co-workers of mom and dad. Now, we have almost 175 Facebook friends and nearly 100 Twitter followers, most of whom we don't even know. Most have experienced and love the Fluffs!
We used to wing it...a lot. Sometimes we still do. However, for the most part, in this year we've educated ourselves about everything under the sun from packaging & marketing to web development and owning a small business. We've got suppliers, designers, bankers and attorneys guiding us through the process of establishing a successful business.
And most significantly, you can now find Madyson's Marshmallows in 7 retail stores in the Seattle area!!!!!! What??!!

Madyson is asked often what she loves most about having her own business. Her answer is usually that she gets to eat the marshmallows...I can't blame her.

What do I love most? I love helping and watching Madyson succeed in this small little adventure we've started. She is so great in the kitchen and so inquisitive about the business. Sure, she's 4 and sometimes she wants to stay home and watch cartoons or ride her bike instead of "going to work" with me. And, that's ok by us. But when she's ready, she takes her job very seriously. Sometimes as I watch her take the marshmallows out of the pans, I feel like I can see the creative wheels turning inside her head. Then she'll say something like "mom, we should make marshmallow with maple syrup in them, like our pancakes" Brilliant Madyson, just brilliant. Let's do it.

I was at a convention last week, while the hub took care of the kiddos at home, and found myself working my buns off while thoroughly enjoying the hotel room to myself. While my husband travels quite a bit for his job, it's not too often that I get away. I reveled in my "professional me" time while finding small moments to indulge in bubble baths and hot tubs.

Speaking of hot tubs, one evening I found myself uncomfortable in a hot tub (you know what I mean...I'm in a hotel hot tub with randoms) with a group of outdoor enthusiasts. Some were friends, others were acquaintances, and yet some were total strangers. But we all had one thing in common (well, 2 things if you count the hot tub)...we love the outdoors and we work in the industry.

I was pleasantly surprised when the subject of gourmet camping came up. Gourmet camping! That's right up my alley! What's everyone's favorite thing to do when camping? Roast marshmallows and make S'mores! And, I'm the owner of a company that's doing this gourmet style! As a marshmallow enthusiast (and now a professional marshmallow-atier), I was excited to chime in to this conversation. We've been trying to get our hand-crafted marshmallows into the gourmet market, but only recently had I realized that there was a specific market for gourmet camp food. I had been thinking about this specific target market for a few weeks but I was having trouble finding exciting and relevant information on the internet about the subject. This hot tub conversation really validated my thoughts. There is a NEED for good gourmet camp food recipes and Madyson's Marshmallows wants to help fill that need!

You don't have to settle for hot dogs and stale buns. You can spice it up a bit and still keeps things simple. Gourmet camping doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, don't let it be complicated. Bring common ingredients for multiple recipes. Pre make everything you can at home. Keep it easy to carry and easy to heat up. There aren't too many quality gourmet camping recipes out there but we found a couple good ones to share...and we prefer to keep the family meals relatively healthy so that you can indulge in our marshmallows after dinner! Here you go...

It's Wedding Season!

A time honored vow...this special verse is used time and time again at weddings and every time I hear it, my heart skips a beat and I hold my husbands hand just a little bit closer.

Wedding season is upon us and brides and grooms in every town are busy planning their special day to the last detail. The guest count, the menu, the location, the flowers, the photography, the vows, the dresses, the tuxedos, and...the favors. Why don't you let us worry about the favors!

It's your special day and we have only you in mind. The week of your wedding, we hand make your marshmallows, hand dip them in chocolate and then hand monogram them with your initials. It's all about you!

Although Madyson has yet to experience a wedding (a day her father is already getting tears in his eyes about), I've certainly been a bride and I know how important every detail is. I remember my wedding like it was yesterday. I remember how concerned I was about even the smallest of details like the card stock that the place settings were printed on and the font that was used. I remember changing my mind a few times when I was asked if the groomsmen could wear sun glasses. I remember being pleasantly surprised that the florist roped off the aisle that I would walk down so that no one could walk before me, even though I hadn't talked about that with her. I remember the intricacy of the flowers on my cake and appreciating that someone made those flowers by hand...one by one. It's the smallest of details that I remember, along with the big ones, of course. The small details matter too!

Celebrating Easter at Madyson's Marshmallows!

Easter at our house involves...you guessed it, MARSHMALLOWS!

We had fun this month preparing all of our Easter products. The most popular item by far was our Easter Eggs.

We made an honest attempt at homemade peeps. I don't think it's a good sign when you husband tells you "nice walruses honey." So that idea was quickly scratched.

We made some new flavors this month, including marshmallows with a Rolo inside. Everybody loves a Rolo!

We also made some wine syrups and flavored some marshmallows with Cabernet! These are for all you moms and dads after you've gotten the kiddos to bed.

Madyson had her best friend Kenza over for an Easter Egg hunt and marshmallow feast. By the looks of it, everyone enjoyed their dipped fluffs!

Even the babies!

Madyson Interviews with Seattle’ Komo 4 News Radio

All dressed up in a sparkly black tutu and her favorite zebra kicks, Madyson anxiously entered the Komo 4 news building ready for her interview with news anchor Brian Calvert. Holding a bag of chocolate dipped marshmallows that we made especially for Brian, Madyson waited patiently in the lobby, looking at us every time someone new walked through the double doors as if to say “is that him?” To prepare for the interview, we showed Mady some pictures of Brian Calvert online ahead of time so we reminded her of the pictures we saw. From that point forward, for each person that walked through the doors, she looked at me and said “that’s not him.” When Brian DID come through the doors, he sweetly greeted us with a big smile and a warm welcome.

Now, let’s back up a minute. Madyson has never been the enthusiastic, social butterfly with strangers that we all know her to be with family and close friends. In the company of those she does not know, she tends to speak softly under a shy grin, with her head pointed into her chest. This is obviously not ideal for an interview with a news program.

So, for the week before the interview, we took every mother’s advice to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! We (mom and dad) took turns pretending to be the news anchor who was interviewing her. She also took her turn interviewing us! We asked her about her marshmallow business, her website, how she got started, where she sells them, what the ingredients are and details about her part in helping to make the marshmallows. We even had all of the ingredients lined up on the table for her so that she could describe the process to us. Madyson confidently showed us, time and time again, how to make a marshmallow.

Do you think that confidence carried over to the official interview? Not so much. Given the fact that she is only 4 years old, she did an outstanding job for her first time being interviewed about the business. Her cuteness factor makes up for practically doing somersaults in her chair while Brian Calvert tried to follow her mouth with his recorder. All said and done, we are so proud of her for having the courage and desire to put herself out there and give it her all. Way to go Madyson!

Boy oh boy, the orders just keep coming in! Thank you everyone for spreading the love of the Fluffs! Because of our popularity, we've decided to make this "small business" official. We've got all of our licensing and food labeling in order, we've printed some fancy brochures and business cards for you to hand out, we've launched a new e-commerce site for you to browse and buy and show your friends, and we've moved our production to a larger location.

Madyson's Gourmet Marshmallows started with a young girl who asked her Daddy how to make a marshmallow. They played around with different recipes and came up with a unique recipe that made their mouth water! They started blending and mixing this delectable treat together in their small kitchen. The first batch was so fantastic that they made another the very next day. They started sending their homemade marshmallows to friends and family and soon, word of mouth spread like wildfire and everyone they knew was calling to get these tasty treats.

Now, dad has a bit of a flair for cooking. In fact, he really should have gone (and he still should go!) to culinary school. Not too long after the first batch of gourmet marshmallows, dad and Madyson were taking it up a notch and experimenting with chocolate dip, caramel drizzle, graham cracker bottoms, and peppermint flavoring in the marshmallows. If they could dream it, they would try it. Now, we're dreaming up new flavors every day! Our family is glad to be able to share these delectable treats with you. Chocolate dipped gourmet marshmallow are perfect for so many occasions!

Madyson's Gourmet Marshmallows are sold fresh from the Seattle area and we'll gladly ship within the United States. Generally, we ship on Mondays so your product arrives fresh by end of week!
